Wash your vehicle often to remove damaging dirt and polution. Before waxing it's wise to "clay" the paint in preparation for the wax. Clay won't scratch the paint or remove paint material. Then, wax the paint with a carnuba wax without cleaner.  Mother's has a full line of clay and waxes to use.  Other good brands are also available.
